Hiring Done Right: How To Attract And Retain The Best Talent

Each recruiter has their own style for hiring, but they all have the same goal: to attract and retain quality talent. Whether the candidate is a good fit for a role or not, it’s important as recruiters to build and nurture those relationships created, because there might be opportunities down the road - as a candidate for another role, or event as a client.

In order to thoroughly assess each candidate, the following are the three areas we focus on at Accela Talent.

Asking The Right Questions

Recruiters need to ask the right questions to get the best evaluation possible and to determine who the best fit for the job is. We are evaluating the communication style, culture fit, skill set and much more in every screening interview.

Keeping it light and friendly affords a smooth and casual experience, however, it’s essential to ask questions that go beyond skimming the surface regarding experience, digging deeper and learning more about the characteristics of the individual.

Addressing all possible challenges and concerns from the start saves time for everyone. Make sure you understand what the candidate is looking for, their reason for leaving, if they are willing to relocate, salary and availability. If they fit the criteria and know what they want, then we will proceed with the hiring process, and if they don’t, we will be frank and tell them that it’s not going to work out.

Assessing Potential vs. Experience

Nowadays, companies are becoming more open and flexible to the idea of hiring someone who might have potential over experience. It provides a great opportunity for candidates as well as for companies.

Hiring for potential widens the talent pool and allows you to identify a diverse group of candidates. Just because a candidate has the experience doesn’t mean they be a fit for the business - it comes down to the individual’s characteristics, attitude, mindset, and personality. Skills can be learned and taught, whereas personal characteristics are more difficult to change.

Removing Bias

Unconscious bias plays a big role in the hiring process whether we want it to or not. Diversity and inclusion are goals every business should strive for as these practices are not only good for business, but also allow the company to build a good reputation as being a great place to work. Removing your bias starts by becoming aware that it exists in the first place. Once you remove your preference, there will be a ripple effect that leads to a more diverse workforce, which will drive a more successful business.

The methods used and the way you hire are important for the success of your business; people are what make up a business, and people are what further success.
