As Recruitment Lead, Joanne (Jo) spearheads finding the best candidates for our clients’ roles. Jo’s early career began working in the travel industry, first on a cruise ship in the Caribbean then selling tours to travel agents across the UK. After a move into Private Medical Insurance, Jo and her husband relocated to Singapore in 2011. Before joining Accela, Jo was responsible for growing the business of a global outsourcing company, specializing in Sales, Service, Support, Human Resources, Training, Back Office, and Home Office Solutions.
Can you tell us about your role and what a typical day at work is like for you?
Not every day is the same. Some days you may have interviews scheduled or offers may be discussed further, contracts issued, and then getting the candidates to agree to the offer and signing. A typical morning would start with reviewing all the responses to InMail’s sent via LinkedIn, Jobsbank, etc. to plan a calling schedule and which roles need the most focus based on urgency. Throughout the day, I screen candidates and establish if they should move through the process, then sharing the company details, JD, and request their latest CV. I’ll then prepare Candidate Packages which are sent to the clients to schedule interviews.
What’s the most inspiring part of your job?
It has to be finding a great candidate and knowing that the role they are moving to is probably going to change their life. We worked on a role for a Customer Success Manager within the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry, that was looking for a very specific profile for the software. We managed to place an individual who was working as a Site Engineer in the construction industry who was managing multiple projects, working long hours. Although he loved his job, he wanted to move into a more tech-focused role as he had a passion for software programming. So securing the role with our client was going to alter his career development and exposure across the region.
What’s been your greatest achievement at work so far?
Finding that candidate that the client had been searching for months after eight! I get a lot of satisfaction when a client comes back to us for additional team-building help because it’s a real testament to how much the client has liked candidates and how well they have performed on employees.
What do you like about working at the Accela?
It’s a great team and environment; it’s always exciting to hear about the new projects every department is involved with.
What do you see in the future for the Recruitment industry?
More adoption of AI, which is already happening with the larger companies, but as tech grows, so does the need for a personal touch, especially when it comes to engaging with people and their decision making. The recruitment industry needs to be able to adapt and evolve to the ever-changing environment, and the different ways individuals and companies fill jobs.
What would you say truly differentiates Accela from the many competitive choices?
Definitely our attention to detail and touchpoints with our clients. Plus the positive experience we give to our candidates throughout the process.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
Cooking – I have a tagine, and I am not afraid to use it! Hanging out with friends, watching movies, looking at property, and rearranging the furniture. I love traveling and visiting new places, China has always been high on my wish list of places; I recently went to Shanghai, and totally fell in love, it is a crazy wonderful place filled with rich history beautiful architecture and amazing food – maybe a little shopping also. Anyone who knows me will also know about my two cats, Paddy & Kobe. We got Kobe as I thought Paddy needed a friend; unfortunately, Kobe is a psychopath so epic fail there.
Finally, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given for your career?
It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.
